    What is business continuity management?

Business continuity management (BCM) is the management process that keeps an organisation's most critical activities running during a disruption and restores them within agreed timeframes. It covers a business impact analysis, risk assessment, recovery strategies, documented plans and regular exercises. ISO 22301 is the international standard for a business continuity management system.

    Business Continuity Management FAQs

Is business continuity management mandatory in Singapore?

For financial institutions regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the MAS Guidelines on Business Continuity Management set clear supervisory expectations. Most other sectors are not legally required to have a BCM programme, but clients, tenders, insurers and regulators increasingly ask for evidence, and ISO 22301 certification is a common way to show it.

What is a business impact analysis (BIA)?

A business impact analysis identifies your critical activities, measures how the impact of a disruption grows over time, and sets how quickly each activity must be recovered. It also records the people, systems, suppliers and premises each activity depends on. The BIA is the foundation for every recovery strategy and plan.

What is the difference between RTO and MTPD?

The maximum tolerable period of disruption (MTPD) is the point after which the impact of an outage becomes unacceptable. The recovery time objective (RTO) is the target time to resume an activity, and it is always set shorter than the MTPD to leave a safety margin.

How often should a business continuity plan be tested?

ISO 22301 requires plans to be exercised at planned intervals and after significant changes. Most organisations run at least one exercise a year, starting with tabletop walkthroughs and building up to full simulations.

How long does it take to implement BCM?

A focused programme for a small or mid-sized organisation typically moves from gap assessment to tested plans over a few months. Multi-site or regulated groups take longer because of wider scope, more critical processes and formal certification audits.

Can we build our business continuity plan ourselves?

Yes. Our free DIY platform guides your team through organisation setup, business impact analysis, risk register and recovery strategies step by step, and you can add consulting support at any point for review, testing or certification readiness.
